Secundum atrial septal defect: routine surgical treatment is not of proven benefit.

چکیده

Secundum atrial septal defect accounts for 10% of congenital heart disease4 at birth and for 30-40% of cases seen in adults.5 Approximately 300-400 patients undergo surgical closure of atrial septal defect in the United Kingdom each year. Reports of the natural history of atrial septal defect and of the indications for and results of surgery imply that patients become increasingly symptomatic with advancing years, that surgical closure in childhood prevents this happening and in adult life reverses the deterioration. It is therefore widely but not universally6 advocated that atrial septal defects with a pulmonary to systemic flow ratio > 1 5:1 should be closed.5 The evidence to justify this policy is weak.

Surgical Treatment of Amplatzer Embolus in a Secundum Atrial Septal Defect Patient

A secundum atrial septal defect is the most common congenital heart defect. Transcatheter treatment of secundum atrial septal defects is a popular and less invasive alternative to surgery. Procedural complications may occur in a wide spectrum, particularly device embolus as the most emergent one, but luckily they do not commonly occur in the clinical setting. Mortality from adverse events relat...

Double-orifice mitral valve and an associated malformation: secundum atrial septal defect.

The authors report a case of double-orifice mitral valve (DOMV) which showed mitral stenosis and mild insufficiency. An associated anomaly was secundum atrial septal defect. DOMV is an unusual congenital heart defect. The occurrence of this anomaly with or without secundum atrial septal defect is very rare. More often it is associated with other congenital malformations arising from atrioventri...

Mid- to Long-term Results of Surgical Treatment of ASD in Patients over 60 Years Old

BACKGROUND There is controversy about the benefit of surgical correction of an atrial septal defect (ASD) in patients over 60 years old. The purpose of this study was to determine whether surgical treatment is beneficial in those 60 years of age or older. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the clinical course of 57 patients (mean age: 63.54±5.59 years) diagnosed with an isolated secundum ASD a...

[Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect].

Isolated secundum atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Surgical closure is the treatment of choice but is associated with a chest scar, some morbidity and a relatively long recovery and the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defect is therefore an attractive approach. 3 children, aged 5-10 years, underwent successfu...
